Those who enjoy the magic of indigo dyeing should consider shibori as this ancient technique evokes the same emotions; suspense, surprise, excitement and wonder. Out tutor Jane Callender (Cally) has been exploring shibori for well over three decades and will share her skills helping you to create beautiful patterns on cloth. Our week begins with techniques such as itajime (fold and clamp) bo maki, including arashi (cylinder wrapping) as well as several methods of stitching and binding. You will have an opportunity to dye cotton, linen and silk in both woad natural and synthetic indigo vats, experiment with iron rust and natural tannins such as pomegranate. At the end of your visit you will unfold and unravel your own collection of intricate and individual blue pieces.

Selvedge will once again take up residence at Chateau Dumas. Set on a hill in peaceful, rolling countryside, less than an hour north of Toulouse international airport, Chateau Dumas is a 22 acre private estate with a large pool and glorious panoramic views. Chose from our range of courses and join the Selvedge team and eleven other participants in a week long creative holiday. You’ll learn new skills with our inspirational tutors, enjoy the delicious cuisine, visit flea markets and brocantes and the medieval market town of St Antonin Noble Val. Prices start at €1580. Click on the selvedge website address above for more information.

With a delicious menu provided by
Penny you will be assured of wonderful cuisine in gracious and comfortable surroundings. Just the perfect setting in which to relax after a day creating shibori and indigo dyeing.

The glorious barn provides an ideal space for learning the shibori techniques and preparing shibori for the indigo vats outside.

The vision of Ruth Higham has brought about a wonderful use of dissused space and honours the tradition of textiles being worked near the one time home of a Turkey Red dye works on the banks of The River Leven in Dumbarton, Scotland. The shibori workshops with indigo and iron rust were held in two industrial units and fabrics were oxidised by the industrial estate car park.
